The last of my UFO's still at the block stage

After dinner last night I decided to sew together the PINS round robin blocks from 2004. I found a great fall background print of tiny leaves in my stash that I used to fill all the empty spaces. I also found this wonderful Jan Patek apple print that was perfect for the border. I was hoping I could call the top finished once I got this much together. Unfortunately, it doesn't say "done" to me. There are two large blank spaces to the left and right of the pumpkin and crow block. So I've pinned it back onto the wall in hopes that it will tell me what else I need to do.

So . . . here's another question for you. What would you do to complete this top? What would you put in those blank spaces that wouldn't take a great deal of time to do? Several ideas have occurred to me since I pinned it up there, but I'm not completely happy with any of them. I would love your help!

  1. You might try on the left side putting one small leaf at an angle, might look like it has fallen from the area above it. On the larger open area to the right, put a stem and 3 or 4 of the smaller leaves along with one more crow. It looks like the crow in the block you have is looking up - give it something to look at. By having it on the design wall something will come to you, just give it time.

  2. I think I would do more of those wonky flying geese - just appliqued in those blank spaces.

  3. Hi, Love your blog and what you make. I would suggest a squirrel in the larger space on a branch with a few leaves and more leaves or garden produce in the smaller place. I would put apples or tied wheat or corn in the small place.

  4. First, it's SO pretty. Love the Jo fabric for the central background and I'm wondering what the crow fabric is. I think it might look done once the quilting is in (if you're going to quilt it), or else do some dark embroidery, a vining line with outlines of the oak leaf shapes along it.

  5. What about using a variegated thread to simply quilt a vine and leaves in both of those spots....it would kind of look like an interrupted border around the main block.

  6. There have been lots of nice suggestions and the top itself is wonderful giving lots of scope for those spaces. Personally, I would only applique a very long stemmed sunflower on the right hand side space as the other side doesn't bother me...
